Not necessarily. Whether it counts as “cheating” depends on the course rules and how you use it. Just like calculators — some exams prohibit them, some allow them; the key is to follow the rules and honestly disclose your AI use.

The Instructor said AI can be used, but I'm not sure how to use it without it becoming plagiarism?

The key is what value you add. If you merely copy and paste AI output, that is plagiarism. But if you: (1) use AI to generate ideas and then rewrite them in your own words, (2) critically evaluate and modify AI suggestions, (3) use AI to help you understand concepts and then apply them yourself, (4) clearly indicate which parts had AI assistance — these are all legitimate ways to use it. If you are still unsure, ask the Instructor directly!

The answer given by AI is different from what the textbook/Instructor says — who should I trust?

In general, trust the textbook and the teacher first — they provide information tailored to your course context. AI answers may be: (1) out of date (knowledge cut-off date), (2) too generic to fit your context, or (3) simply wrong (hallucination). But this is also a great learning opportunity! You can investigate why there is a difference, ask the teacher, and deepen your understanding.

If all the other students are using AI, won't I be at a disadvantage if I don't?

First of all, “everyone else is doing it” does not mean it is the right approach — if the course does not allow it, then it is not allowed. Secondly, assessment is meant to help you learn and grow, not to compete over who can use AI more cleverly. Those who rely on AI to complete assignments will show their weakness when they truly need to demonstrate their ability, such as in oral exams, on-site assessments or workplace performance. Focus on your own learning and develop genuine ability.

How should I label the use of AI in my assignment?

It is recommended to add an "AI use statement" at the end of the assignment, explaining: (1) which AI tool was used, (2) for what purpose (for example: brainstorming, grammar checking, translation assistance), and (3) how you modified or integrated the AI output. For example: "This report used ChatGPT to help generate an outline; all content was rewritten and verified by myself." Each Instructor may have different requirements; please follow the Instructor's instructions.

Will the AI detection tool wrongly flag content I wrote myself?

Yes. This is a known issue with existing AI detection tools — they are not perfect and may produce false positives. That is why: (1) it is safer to disclose your AI use honestly, (2) keep records of your work process (drafts, AI conversation logs, etc.), and (3) being able to explain your thinking process is important. If you are wrongly flagged, this evidence can help you clarify the situation.
