About Uedu

Uedu is a university ed-tech platform centred on generative artificial intelligence, integrating teaching, learning and research to build an AI teaching assistant system for university classrooms.

Platform core features include:

  • UeduGPTs: create a dedicated AI TA for each Course to guide Student self-directed learning
  • Intelligent Quiz: AI auto-generates questions, supporting multiple question types and real-time statistics

If your university is a partner institution, you can use a dedicated subdomain (for example, ncu.uedu.tw, ntu.uedu.tw, nthu.uedu.tw, nycu.uedu.tw, nptu.uedu.tw), and all functions are exactly the same.

How to use this guide

This guide is designed for instructors using Uedu for the first time, taking you from zero to completing course creation and basic setup. The document uses the following callout boxes:

2. Sign-in and registration

Sign up for an account

Please follow the steps below to create your Uedu account:

  1. Go to https://uedu.tw/signin (or your university-specific portal, such as ncu.uedu.tw/signin)
  2. Registration options:
    • Google account: click 'Sign in with Google', and an account is created automatically after authorisation
    • Apple ID: click "Sign in with Apple"
    • Email registration: fill in Email and password, then complete verification
  3. After the first login, the system will guide you through the basic profile setup

Tip

We recommend using your school's .edu.tw email address to register. You will need to verify your Instructor identity when claiming a Course later, and using a school email can simplify the process.

Log in to the platform

  1. Go to the sign-in page https://uedu.tw/signin
  2. Select your login method (same as when you registered)
  3. If two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled, the system will require a 6-digit verification code (see Chapter 11)

University-only portal

Some partner universities have dedicated subdomains; the page will display that university's logo and colour scheme:

The functions of all subdomains are exactly the same as the main domain; the only difference is the page appearance.

3. Obtain course -- claim or create

Uedu provides two ways for Instructors to obtain management permissions for a Course:

  • Claim Course: your Course has been imported into the system by the school; simply claim it directly
  • Create new Course: Your Course cannot be found in the system; create a new Course yourself

Tip

If your university is a Uedu partner institution, course data has usually already been imported by the institution. We recommend trying 'Claim Course' first.

Claim Course

The process for claiming a Course requires three steps: search for the Course, verify instructor identity, and wait for review.

Step 1: Search for course

  1. Click "Teaching Toolkit" → "Course Setup" from the left-hand menu
  2. Select 'Claim Course'
  3. Enter in the search field:
    • School Name
    • Term (for example 114-2)
    • Course name or course code
  4. Find your Course in the search results and click "Claim this Course"

Step 2: Verify instructor identity

  1. Enter your school email address (must end with .edu.tw)
  2. Tap "Send verification code"
  3. Go to your inbox and collect the 6-digit verification code
  4. Enter the verification code in the page to complete verification
Note

The verification code is valid for 15 minutes. If it expires, you must send it again; there is a 5-minute cooldown between sends. The system only accepts institutional email addresses (e.g. .edu.tw, .edu, .ac.jp) and does not accept personal email addresses (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo).

Step 3: Submit for review

  1. Enter your name
  2. Enter your employing organisation (optional)
  3. Upload teaching qualification document (optional, but recommended to speed up review)
    • Accepted formats: PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPG, PNG
    • Maximum file size: 5 MB
    • Recommended documents: Instructor ID, appointment letter, timetable screenshot
  4. Tap "Submit application"
  5. Awaiting administrator review; you will receive an email notification once approved
Tip

Once the claim is approved, the system will automatically set the Course to private and generate a 6-digit Course code. You can get the student join link from the approval notification email.

Create a new Course

If your Course cannot be found in the system, you can create it yourself:

  1. Click "Teaching Toolkit" → "Course Setup" from the left-hand menu
  2. Select 'Create New Course'
  3. Enter Course Information:
    • Course Chinese name (required)
    • Course English name (optional)
    • School (search supported)
    • Semester (default: current semester)
    • Department
    • Instructor name (Chinese and English)
    • Course description / syllabus (optional, but recommended)
  4. Complete email verification (same as the Course claiming process)
  5. Submit application and await review
Tip

If you provided a syllabus or course description when creating the Course, the system will automatically use AI to generate an initial AI TA System Prompt for you, saving time on later configuration.

View application status

You can check the application progress at any time:

  • Claim Course: go to “Teaching Toolkit” → “My Claim Applications”
  • Create Course: go to “Teaching Toolkit” → “My Course Application”

4. Set up UeduGPTs AI TA

UeduGPTs is a core feature of Uedu, providing a dedicated AI teaching assistant for each Course. Students can interact with the AI teaching assistant at any time and receive guidance and support related to the Course.

Go to the Course Edit page

After your course claim or creation has been approved, please follow the steps below to enter Course Setup:

  1. Click "Teaching Toolkit" → "Teacher Console" from the left-hand menu
  2. Find your course card and click the "Teacher Dashboard" button
  3. In the left menu of the Instructor dashboard, click "Course Management" → "Course Setup"

Set up the AI teaching assistant's System Prompt

System Prompt is the most important setting for the AI teaching assistant; it determines the AI's 'persona' and behaviour.

What is System Prompt?

A System Prompt is a hidden instruction text that defines the AI teaching assistant:

  • What role will you play (for example, 'TA for the Data Structures Course')
  • What teaching method is used (such as Socratic questioning)
  • Style and constraints for answering questions (e.g. use Traditional Chinese, do not give the answer directly)
  • Relationship to the course content (for example, "The teaching material used in this course is 《...》")

Write suggestions

A good System Prompt should include the following elements:

  1. Role definition: "You are the AI TA for the "Data Structures" Course"
  2. Course information: Course name, Instructor, teaching materials used
  3. Teaching style
    • Socratic questioning: guide Students to think without giving the answer directly
    • With example explanations: explain abstract concepts using everyday examples
    • Layered guidance: adjust the level of explanation according to the Student's understanding
  4. Code of conduct
    • Respond in Traditional Chinese
    • Questions beyond the scope of the Course should be asked to the instructor
    • Do not assist with exam cheating
Tip

If you provided a syllabus when creating the Course, the system will automatically generate a System Prompt. You can fine-tune it from there; there is no need to start from scratch.

Select AI model

The model settings are on the “Model and API Key” page in Teacher mode. The platform’s default model is GPT-5.6 Luna — available automatically across all courses, free, preselected in the student dropdown, with no setup required and no API Key needed. If a course needs a more powerful model or a different provider, you can enable advanced models on this page (the course must provide the relevant provider’s API Key):

GPT-model systems can also set reasoning effort: the higher the effort, the more thorough the response, but the slower and more costly it is, so it can be adjusted according to the nature of the Course. Advanced models and those from other providers use BYOK — you must enter the Course's own OpenAI/Anthropic/xAI API keys on the "Models and API Key" page before they are opened to Students; usage costs are borne by that key. If not set, Students will always use the platform's free default model.

Tip

Most courses can remain on the platform's default GPT-5.6 Luna without any extra configuration. Only when stronger reasoning is needed (such as complex problem-solving or in-depth analysis) or when a specific provider is specified do you need to provide your own API Key to enable advanced models.

Built-in intelligent features of the AI Teaching Assistant

The AI TA has the following built-in functions, which are automatically enabled during conversation and do not require any additional setup by the Instructor:

Web search

When a Student asks a question that requires up-to-date information (such as the latest research, current news, technical documentation, etc.), the AI TA will automatically search the web and then answer using the latest information.

  • AI decides autonomously whether search is needed, without requiring manual triggering by the Student
  • When searching, the Student view will show the prompt 'Searching the web......'
  • After the search is complete, AI will combine the search results with Course knowledge to answer the question
  • Applicable to all AI models provided on the platform
Tip

The web search function enables the AI TA to answer questions beyond the training data cut-off, such as "What new machine learning frameworks are there recently?" or "What has changed in the latest version of this package?".

Conversation history search

Students can use natural language to ask the AI TA to search their past conversation records. The system uses semantic similarity matching, so related content can be found even if the wording is not exactly the same.

  • Students only need to ask naturally, for example:
    • 'What questions have I asked before about recursion?'
    • 'Where is the sorting algorithm you explained last time?'
    • 'Help me find previous conversations about report format'
  • AI automatically decides whether to search the history of the conversation
  • When searching, the Student view will show the prompt 'Searching conversation history......'
  • Can search across Courses, or specify a particular Course
  • Supports time-range filtering (for example, “last week”, “last month”, “this semester”)
Tip

Conversation history search allows Students to quickly review content they have learnt before, and is especially suitable for mid-term and final revision. Instructors can remind Students to make good use of this feature.

Other course settings

On the edit page, you can also set:

  • Course name: the Course name shown to Students
  • Course description: a brief introduction to the Course, visible to Students before they join
  • Feature module toggle: Control which add-on features are enabled in the Course
    • Socratic Dialogue mode: set a specific discussion topic to guide Students towards deep thinking
    • AI image generation: when enabled, Students can use GPT Image 2.5 (image generation model) to generate images, suitable for art, design and similar courses

5. Course Privacy and Code Management

Understand course privacy settings

Each Course has two privacy states:

Important

A newly claimed or created Course is set to private by default. Setting a Course to public means that anyone may join freely, so please use this with care.

Course Code

Each private course has a 6-character alphanumeric code used for students to join the Course quickly.

Code features:

  • 6 characters, consisting of upper-case letters and digits
  • Will not duplicate within the same semester
  • Example: 3AKR7N

Manage course codes

On the Course Management page, you can:

  1. View code: the current course code is shown at the top of the management page
  2. Regenerate: click "Regenerate code" and the old code will immediately become invalid
  3. Sharing link: the Student join link format is https://uedu.tw/goto/{代碼}

Note

After generating a new code, the old code will become invalid immediately. Students who have not yet joined must use the new code. Students who have already joined will not be affected.

Switch between public and private

On the Course Management page, you can switch the course's public/private status at any time. Once switched to public, anyone can join directly via the course link, with no code or review required.

6. Invite Students to join the Course

Four ways students can join

Share course code with students

The most common way is to share the course code:

  1. Method 1: paste the join link https://uedu.tw/goto/{代碼} into the Course announcement, slides, or chat group
  2. Method 2: Tell Students the 6-digit code verbally; Students enter the code on the platform to join

The page where students enter code automatically converts lowercase letters to uppercase, reducing input errors.

Note

To prevent brute-force guessing, each account is allowed a maximum of 10 incorrect code entries per hour. After the limit is exceeded, you must wait one hour.

Use class roster

If you have a list of students' student numbers, you can import them into the system in advance:

  1. Go to the "Enrolled Students" section on the Course Management page
  2. Paste or import the student ID list
  3. Students on the list are automatically added when they access the course link (no code or approval required)

Review join applications

When a private Course has Students submitting join requests:

  1. You and the TA will receive Email notifications
  2. Go to the "Pending Review" section on the Course Management page
  3. Choose 'Approve' or 'Reject' for each application
  4. You can also use "batch approval" to process multiple applications at once
  5. The review result will be notified to Students by Email
Tip

TAs also have permission to review join requests and manage members; you can delegate this task to TAs.

Remove Student

To remove a Student from a Course:

  1. Find the student in the "Members list" on the Course Management page
  2. Tap "Remove"
  3. Confirm removal operation

Removed students will receive an email notification and will not be able to rejoin via the public link (reapplication required).

Use QR Code to let students join by scanning

Teachers can project a QR Code in class so that Students can scan it with their phones to join the Course quickly:

  1. On the course card in the Teacher Console, click the "QR Code" button
  2. Open a large course-specific QR Code image
  3. Project the QR Code onto the classroom screen
  4. After a Student scans with their mobile phone, the join link opens automatically

Tip

QR Code is especially suitable for use in the first class of a physical classroom; Students only need to scan the code to join quickly, with no need to enter a code manually.

7. Teacher Console

Enter the Teacher Console

Click "Teaching Toolkit" → "Teacher Console" from the left-hand menu to see an overview of all your Courses.

Overview information

Four summary statistics are shown at the top of the page:

Course card

Each Course is presented as cards, including:

  • Course name, school, semester
  • Number of enrolled students
  • Number of active interactions this week
  • Quick action buttons:
    • Enter the Course (Teacher Mode)
    • Edit Course settings
    • Manage Student and privacy settings

The term dropdown at the top of the page lets you switch between courses in different terms.

Enter Course Teacher Mode

After clicking the "Enter Course" button for any course in the Teacher Console, you will enter that course's Instructor Mode page. The course statistics panel is shown by default, including:

  • Student interaction statistics: number of conversations, active users, new interactions this week
  • Time trend chart: changes in interaction volume by day or week
  • Individual student usage: each student's number of conversations and last interaction time

The left sidebar lists all available functional modules (such as Quiz, Survey, recording, Forum, Bloom's analysis, etc.); click to switch to a different function page.

8. Quick overview of basic teaching functions

This chapter provides a brief introduction to Uedu’s main teaching function modules. For full operating instructions, please refer to the detailed manual for each module.

Quiz system

Uedu's quiz system supports both AI automatic question generation and manual question authoring, making it suitable for in-class quizzes, mid-term and final assessments, and similar scenarios.

Main functions:

  • AI automatic question generation: upload materials (PDF, DOCX), and AI automatically generates multiple question types
  • Question type support: multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer
  • Question bank management: create question banks for reuse and combination
  • Assign Quiz: set the open period, response time limit and number of attempts
  • Grade statistics: view the class grade distribution and individual Student performance in real time

Basic workflow:

  1. Enter the Course → Quiz Management
  2. Create a question bank (AI-generated questions or manual question creation)
  3. Create a Quiz assignment and set the time and rules
  4. Student responses
  5. View marks and statistics
Tip

The AI question-generation function can automatically generate questions from the lecture notes or textbook content you upload. The more specific the materials you provide, the better the generated questions will be.

Survey System

Create an in-class survey, teaching evaluation, or learning survey.

Main functions:

  • Multiple question types: single choice, multiple response, scale, open-text
  • Anonymous or named responses
  • Real-time collection statistics and visualisation
  • Export collected data (CSV)

Basic workflow:

  1. Enter the Course → Survey Management
  2. Create a survey and design the questions
  3. Publish to Students
  4. View statistics and analysis

Course Announcements

Publish announcement messages and attachments to enrolled Students.

Main functions:

  • Publish announcement
  • Upload attachment files (PDF, DOCX, images, and more)
  • Enrolled students can see announcements as soon as they enter the course page

Class recording

Record the classroom screen, webcam video and audio for playback after class.

Note

When recording the class, please inform the Student in advance. The recorded audio and video files will be stored on the server.

Real-time speech captions

When the Instructor starts audio recording, the system will automatically use AI speech recognition (Whisper) to convert the Instructor’s spoken words into live captions, synchronised and pushed to the screens of all connected Students.

  • Supports Chinese and English speech recognition
  • Subtitles are displayed live beneath the Student's course page
  • Once recording ends, the full transcript is available for the Instructor to view and download
Tip

Real-time captions are especially suitable for large classrooms, students with hearing impairments, or EMI (English-medium instruction) courses, helping students understand the teaching content in real time.

Video and audio archive management

The recorded video and audio will be saved automatically, and the Instructor can manage them in "Video archive" and "Audio archive" in the teacher mode sidebar:

  • Play playback and download video files
  • Use AI to automatically generate video subtitles or audio transcripts
  • Set the public/private status for each recording (once public, Students can view it)
  • The video format will be automatically converted from WebM to MP4 for playback on different devices

Course Forum

Create an online discussion space for a Course, enabling Students to engage in topic-based discussion, peer interaction and reflective writing.

Main functions:

  • Board management: create multiple discussion boards by topic, week or project
  • Labels: name your own labels and pick from 8 colors to help organise posts (no limit on the number of labels)
  • Post management: pin important posts, lock ended discussions, delete inappropriate content
  • 學生匿名發文:每個看板可設定「不開放/由學生自行選擇/一律匿名」。匿名只對同學生效:同學看到的是「匿名」「匿名1」等代號,教師與助教仍看得到真名(介面會標示「匿名發文」),計分、AI 品質評估與覆核都照常運作。教師、助教與未成年學生一律具名;匿名與否送出後不可更改,關閉設定也不會回溯揭露既有匿名貼文。公開回覆匿名貼文時請勿點名
  • AI quality assessment: the system automatically identifies high-quality and shallow posts, and teachers can override the AI judgement
  • Scoring system: customise points for posts and replies, with Emoji bonus points supported (instructor only)
  • Leaderboard: view students' participation scores and rankings in real time
  • Attachment upload: supports PDF, Word, Excel, images and other files (limit 10 MB)

Basic workflow:

  1. Enter Course → sidebar 'Forum'
  2. Create a board and set tags and scoring rules
  3. Publish a pinned post as discussion guidance
  4. Student posting and interaction
  5. Give high-quality posts feedback with Emoji and view the leaderboard
Tip

Instructors and TAs can use special Emoji to award extra points: (+1), (+3), (+5). Only Emoji from instructors and TAs count towards the score; students' Emoji do not affect scoring.

AI Knowledge Base (RAG)

If your Course has a designated textbook or handouts, you can upload the teaching materials to the AI knowledge base, allowing the AI TA to automatically refer to the Course materials when answering Student questions rather than relying only on general knowledge. This feature is particularly suitable for Courses with specific teaching materials.

Important

The uploaded course materials are for AI reference only; Students cannot download the original files. Please ensure you have the right to use the materials (for example, self-authored handouts or openly licensed materials) to avoid copyright infringement.

How it works:

  1. After the Teacher uploads course materials, the system automatically breaks the document into paragraphs and builds an index
  2. When a Student asks a question, AI finds the most relevant passage from the teaching materials
  3. AI combines textbook content with System Prompt to generate responses

Basic workflow:

  1. Go to the Course page and click the "AI Knowledge Base" card at the top
  2. Drag or click to upload teaching materials
  3. Waiting for system processing to complete (the status will change from "Processing" to "Ready")
  4. Use the “test retrieval” feature to enter a sample question and preview which teaching materials AI will cite
  5. Once effectiveness is confirmed, students can obtain answers based on the teaching materials in the conversation
Tip

After uploading course materials, we recommend using the 'Test retrieval' function. Enter a few common Student questions to check that AI can cite the course material correctly before making it available to Students.

TA Management

Instructors can add TAs to a Course to help manage course matters.

What TA can do:

  • Start lecture recording and live captions
  • Run in-class quiz
  • Edit Course information and AI TA settings
  • Review Student join applications and manage members
  • Give Emoji points in the Forum

What TA cannot do:

  • Add or remove other TAs
  • Delete or archive a Course
  • Export Student dialogue data (unless authorised as a "super TA", see Chapter 9)

Process:

  1. Enter the Course → Course Management → "TA Management"
  2. Enter the TA account to add
  3. The system automatically sends Email notifications to new TAs
  4. If you need to remove, click "Remove" in the TA list.
Tip

The TA must first register an account on the Uedu platform before they can be added as a TA. It is recommended that the TA complete registration and 2FA settings first.

Bulk email sending by the instructor

Instructors can send emails directly through the platform to Students enrolled on the Course, suitable for course announcements, assignment reminders, and more.

Main functions:

  • Select recipients: all active students or only students on the course list
  • Supports writing emails in Markdown format (bold, italics, links, headings, tables, etc.)
  • Preview the number of recipients before sending
  • You may first send a test e-mail to yourself to check the content
  • View delivery history and status

AI interactive assignment

Instructors can assign an "AI interactive assignment", allowing Students to carry out a structured dialogue task with AI, which is then automatically marked by the system or manually marked by the Instructor.

  • Socratic concept exploration: AI guides Students to develop a deeper understanding of a specific concept through questioning
  • Peer feedback simulation: after students submit their work, AI provides structured feedback
  • Creative writing coach: AI helps students practise writing and offers suggestions

We recommend choosing “mixed mode” grading, so AI gives an initial grade first and the Instructor then reviews the parts that need adjustment, which can greatly reduce marking time.

Real-time interaction tools

Uedu provides a range of real-time classroom interaction tools, allowing Instructors to engage in live interaction with Students during teaching. All interaction tools are enabled in the 'Real-time Interaction' section of the Instructor mode sidebar.

Live Polls

Teachers can launch live polls in class, and Students answer instantly on their phones or computers, with results displayed in real time.

  • Supports single-choice and multiple-choice questions
  • Results update in real time after students respond (bar chart displayed)
  • Suitable for pre-class warm-up, concept confirmation, and opinion polling

Q&A Wall

Students can submit questions anonymously to the Q&A wall, and the Instructor reviews and responds on the big screen.

Word Cloud

After the instructor asks a question, students enter keywords and the system generates a word cloud in real time; terms with higher frequency appear larger.

Interactive effects and countdown timer

Instructors can push visual effects to all Students’ screens:

  • Interactive effects: push Emoji animations (such as applause, fireworks and rockets) to the Student's screen to enliven the classroom atmosphere
  • Text ticker: Push custom text messages to the top of Students' screens (e.g. "Great job!", "Pay attention to the following key points")
  • Countdown timer: push a countdown timer to Students' screens (30 seconds, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes), suitable for timed discussions or group activities

These interactive tools do not require any additional software installation; Students only need to open the Course page in a browser to receive them.

Course Resources

Teachers can upload files and add external links in the Course as learning resources for Students.

Main functions:

  • Upload files: PDF, DOCX, PPTX, images, and more
  • Add external links: YouTube videos, Google Drive files, etc.
  • Category management: create categories, drag to reorder
  • Visibility control: set whether each resource is public to Students

  3. Set the resource name, category and visibility
  4. Students can view public resources directly on the Course page
Tip

Course resources and the AI knowledge base (RAG) are different features. Course resources are materials that students can download or view directly; the AI knowledge base is internal knowledge for the AI assistant to reference, and students cannot download the original files. Science laboratory simulation

The platform also provides 96 browser-based scientific simulations (physics 46, earth science 31, chemistry 10, biology 9), which can be linked directly in Course resources or assignment instructions, with no extra installation required and no login needed for Students to use them.

How can it be used:

  • Pre-class preparation: assign a simulation and ask Students to identify the conditions under which a certain rule starts to fail
  • In-class demonstration: project the operation, turning inaccessible mechanisms (such as the Coriolis effect and adiabatic cooling) into adjustable parameters
  • Inquiry and practice: students design variables, record data and export CSV files themselves, then analyse them in a spreadsheet

Process:

  1. Go to Science Lab to find suitable simulations by subject or keyword
  2. Copy the URL for this simulation and paste it into course resources, announcements, or assignment instructions
  3. We recommend trying it yourself first to confirm that the simulation performs appropriately for the concept you intend to teach before giving it to Students
Tip

The mock page sidebar includes an AI experiment assistant. It can read the simulation state in front of the Student and ask about specific parameters. By design, it does not replace the Student in drawing graphs or in writing explanations, because generating and interpreting representations is itself a learning objective. Browse student dialogues

Instructors can view the full dialogue records between all Students and the AI TA, to understand Students’ learning status and common questions.

Usage:

  1. Enter Course Teacher Mode → sidebar "View Conversations"
  2. Select the Student you want to view from the Student list
  3. View the full conversation history between that Student and AI

Browsing student dialogue records involves personal data; please use them for teaching purposes only. Under the Personal Data Protection Act, instructors have a duty to safeguard and keep confidential the student data they access.

Learning Profiling

Uedu offers three major open-source psychological scales, enabling Students to understand their own traits through self-assessment and helping Instructors understand Students' learning styles and personality tendencies.

The AI learning profile feature automatically integrates multi-dimensional learning data of Students on the Uedu platform and uses AI to generate a cross-course learner description, enabling the AI Teaching Assistant to respond to each Student more personally.

  • Learner trait inventory results (RIASEC, Big Five, OEJTS)

The profile is automatically updated every 24 hours; if learning data do not change, the cache is extended. Students may at any time visit https://uedu.tw/learning-profile/ to view it or manually regenerate.

Learning Portfolio

The Learning history file (Portfolio) records all Student achievements on Uedu and presents the growth journey using the Taiwan mountain rating system.

Core functions:

  • Achievement system: completing activities such as Quizzes, Surveys, AI dialogues and scales can earn achievement badges and points
  • Mountain grade: Progress from "foothills" to "hundred peaks" according to accumulated points, across 12 levels
  • Certificate issuance: significant achievements may receive digital certificates, with IPFS blockchain verification supported
  • LinkedIn export: certificates can be exported to a LinkedIn profile with one click
  • Public file: Students may choose to make their Learning history public and share it with others

Tip

Achievements in the Learning history file will be checked automatically after Students complete each activity, with no need for manual action by the Instructor. Instructors can remind Students to review their own growth records.

Uedu includes a range of learning analytics tools built in, helping instructors understand students' cognitive development and Learning history, while also supporting data export for academic research.

Bloom's cognitive level analysis

The system automatically analyses the conversation between each Student and the AI TA, and determines the cognitive level shown in the conversation (based on Bloom's Taxonomy revised edition).

Bloom's analysis is executed asynchronously and does not affect the Student's conversation experience. The analysis usually completes within a few seconds after the Student sends a message. Knowledge graph

The Knowledge Graph feature can automatically extract concepts and relationships from course materials (AI knowledge base), build a visual knowledge structure map, and track each Student's mastery of each concept.

  • Course knowledge graph: AI automatically extracts core concepts from teaching materials and the relationships between them, producing an interactive graphic
  • Student knowledge map: aligned with the course knowledge graph, showing the concepts each Student has demonstrated understanding of
  • Knowledge gap analysis: compare the Course knowledge graph with the class's overall grasp to identify concepts that need strengthening
  • Data export: export knowledge graph data in JSON format

  4. Once generation is complete, you can view and edit the concepts, or switch to Student view mode

The Knowledge Graph requires course materials to be uploaded to the AI Knowledge Base before it can be used. If the Course has not yet uploaded any materials, this function will not be able to generate a Knowledge Graph. Conversation data export

Teachers can export complete conversation records between Students and the AI TA for teaching research or learning analytics.

Export format:

  • JSON format: structured data, suitable for programme analysis
  • Excel format: suitable for general instructors to browse and analyse statistics

Process:

  1. Enter Course Teacher Mode → sidebar "Data Export"
  2. Before the first export, you must sign the Teacher Data Protection Undertaking (signed online)
  3. Select export scope and format
  4. The system processes this in the background, and once completed, sends a download notification by Email
  5. Exported files are password-protected
Important

Exported conversation data is the Student's personal data and is protected under the Personal Data Protection Act. Once the Instructor has signed the Data Protection Responsibility Letter, they assume the obligations of data custody, lawful use and secure destruction. Please do not share exported data with unauthorised third parties.

Super TA authorisation

If you need to let TAs export data too (for example, research assistants), the Instructor can authorise a specific TA as a "super TA":

  1. Enter the TA management page
  2. Enable the 'Super TA' permission for the target TA
  3. The TA must sign the Super TA confidentiality undertaking before data export may proceed
Note

Super TA permissions give TAs the ability to access student conversation data; please authorise only trusted personnel and confirm they understand their data protection obligations.

The boundary between AI use and assessment (platform rules)

Instructors hold both the "grade assessment power" and the ability to "view learning data". Here there is only one platform-level prohibition; everything else falls under your teaching autonomy:

The only prohibited item: research may not be tied to grades

Research participation (signing the research consent form, data used for academic research) is completely decoupled from course grades. If a Student does not sign or withdraws consent midway, the course continues, AI continues, and grades continue to be counted — only their data is excluded from research. Any practice such as "signing the consent form for extra marks" or "participation in research is required to take the course" is a serious breach of research ethics: when there is an imbalance of power between Instructor and Student, "voluntary" based on grades is not valid. In recent years, there have already been major misconduct cases in Taiwan in which teachers and researchers required Students to participate in research for credits — individuals were dismissed and suspended, and institutions were fined and required to repay funding.

Usage scoring = your teaching autonomy. Requiring Students to use AI conversations, take part in discussions and include this in grades is in the same category as "assignment submission scoring" and "in-class speaking scoring"; it falls within instructional design and is neither prohibited nor mandated by the platform. The platform's role is to provide data and quality signals; how you use and convert them is up to you.

Assessment design recommendation: quality signals beat raw counts

Pure dialogue counts or word counts are easy to inflate with spam, so the platform provides quality-adjusted metrics for this purpose; we recommend using the following first:

  • Forum scoring system: weighted points system + Emoji feedback + BERT semantic quality assessment + AI originality detection, automatically discounting spam and low-quality posts (see Forum scoring methodology)
  • Socratic Dialogue: evaluate based on message quality rather than just the number of turns
  • Bloom cognitive level analysis: looking at the distribution of cognitive depth in dialogue is closer to learning engagement than simply looking at counts

Two practical reminders (recommendations, not requirements):

  • Announce in advance: if AI use is included in grades, please state the scoring method in advance in the course description or syllabus — this is a basic principle of transparency in classroom assessment and can also reduce disputes.
  • Research validity: if you later wish to use data from this Course for educational research, please note that "grade-triggered use" and "natural use" differ in the nature of behavioural data; this should be explained or controlled for in analysis and publication.

The hardest part of the above “advance notice” practice in reality is writing “how far it may be used” in a way that even TA can judge accurately. AI Usage Guidelines Generator first lets you complete a five-question self-assessment of governance maturity, then generates a chapter-by-chapter draft of the guidelines based on the course context, including usage levels for various assignments mapped to L0–L4, the disclosure method for each level, and the procedure for determining improper use. The output can be printed or saved as a PDF and placed directly into the syllabus.

When a school, faculty or department needs to set a policy for the whole unit, simply choose "Institutional Level" in the same tool. The output is a draft and may only be implemented after passing your unit's established review process.

11. Two-step verification (2FA)

Why must instructors enable 2FA

Important

All accounts with Instructor, TA or system administrator privileges must enable two-factor authentication. This is a mandatory security policy of the platform; before 2FA is set up, the system will restrict access to other functions.

Instructor accounts can access students' AI conversation records, learning history, grades and other personal data. Under Articles 18 and 20-1 of the Personal Data Protection Act, the platform is obliged to implement appropriate security measures. Two-step verification ensures the account remains secure even if the password is leaked.

Setup steps

Preparation

Please first install an authenticator app on your phone (choose any one):

  • Authy (recommended, supports multi-device synchronisation and cloud backup)
  • Google Authenticator
  • Microsoft Authenticator

Enable 2FA

  1. Go to the security settings page https://uedu.tw/2fa/setup (or follow the system's automatic guidance after claiming the Course)
  2. Scan QR Code: Open the authenticator app on your phone and scan the QR Code on the page
    • If scanning is not possible, click 'Enter key manually' and enter the key into the app manually
  3. Enter verification code: enter the 6-digit number shown by the authenticator app on the page to confirm the setting was successful
  4. Save recovery codes: The system will generate 10 one-time recovery codes (format such as A3K7-M9P2)
Important

Please make sure you store the 10 recovery codes in a safe place (a password manager, or printed on paper and kept somewhere secure). Each recovery code can only be used once. If you lose your phone and have used up all recovery codes, you will need to restore access through the email reset process (with a 24-hour cooling-off period).

Daily login

After enabling 2FA, each login will:

  1. Enter account and password (or sign in with OAuth)
  2. The system prompts you to enter a 6-digit verification code
  3. Open the authenticator app on your phone and enter the number shown
  4. Complete sign-in
Tip

TOTP codes refresh every 30 seconds. If the code is about to expire (less than 5 seconds remaining), it is recommended to wait for the new code before entering it.

Manage 2FA settings

Go to https://uedu.tw/2fa/settings to:

  • Check the 2FA status and activation date
  • View the number of remaining recovery codes
  • Regenerate recovery code (old code becomes invalid immediately)
Note

Instructor accounts cannot disable 2FA while the instructor status is active. This is a mandatory platform security policy requirement.

What if the mobile phone is lost?

  1. Use recovery code: On the 2FA verification page, select "Use recovery code" and enter any one of the previously saved recovery codes to log in
  2. Email Emergency Reset: If the recovery codes are also used up:
    1. Select "Can't use authenticator" on the login page
    2. The system sends a reset link to your registered Email
    3. The reset link has a 24-hour cooling-off period (for safety reasons)
    4. Link valid for 48 hours
Note

Security restriction: after 5 consecutive incorrect input attempts, the account will be locked for 15 minutes.

12. Course management and real-time classroom tools (LMS)

In addition to AI teaching assistants and Quiz/Survey tools, Uedu provides full Course Management (LMS) functions: assignment submission and marking, group collaboration, attendance and leave requests, the Gradebook and semester final marks, the course calendar, as well as a suite of real-time interactive tools designed for use in the classroom. This chapter introduces them in the order of "from the start of term to the end of term". Unless otherwise stated, the following functions are all located in the Teacher Console sidebar, and are only available for formal semester courses.

Before term start: Course copying and Course units

Import from an existing Course

When a new semester starts, you do not need to rebuild your teaching design. In the import function under "Assignment Upload", select a previous Course you have taught to copy assignments (including settings), grading rubrics, group scheme structures and custom calendar events in one go. All copied items are created as drafts, and the dates will be shifted in bulk by the number of days you specify — once you have confirmed the adjustments, publish them one by one; last year's deadline will not be accidentally opened to Students.

Course unit (weekly module)

"Course unit" lets you organise teaching activities scattered across Quizzes, Surveys, Worksheets and Assignments into orderly modules by week or topic. On the student-facing course page, they appear in unit order at the top, and clicking takes students directly to the relevant activity. Units can be set to hidden (not revealed while being prepared), and deleted activities are automatically hidden from students and marked "inactive" for instructors.

Assignment submission and marking

Create Assignment

'Assignment Upload' is the course assignment submission inbox. Each assignment can be set with opening and closing times, allowed file types and sizes (100MB per file maximum), and a submission mode (individual or group). There are three levels of handling after the deadline:

  • No late submissions allowed: the deadline closes the item.
  • Allow late submissions: submissions can still be made after the deadline; the system will automatically mark them as "late" and record the number of late days; a final late deadline can also be set separately.
  • Late submission penalty: after setting "deduct X% per day", the marking page will show a suggested score based on the number of late days, which you can apply with one click — the system will not adjust marks automatically; final discretion remains with the Instructor.

Scoring Rubric

You can create multi-criteria, multi-level rubrics and attach them to assignments. Students can view the grading criteria before submitting; when marking, you click the level for each criterion and the total score is calculated automatically. After returning the work, Students see itemised rubric feedback. The same rubric can be reused across multiple assignments.

Mark and return

The marking page is categorised by 'To be marked / Marked / Returned / Not submitted'. PDF, image and plain text files can be previewed directly online without downloading. Students cannot see scores and feedback before you click 'Return'; you can also return everything in bulk. 'Similarity detection' compares text submissions in the Course pairwise — please note that similarity is only a clue for manual review (shared templates and citing the same data can both cause similarity). The platform does not perform AI-generated content detection, and we do not recommend using similarity percentages directly as evidence of plagiarism.

Individual adjustment (deadline extension)

The 'Individual adjustment' option on the marking page can set an individual deadline for a specific Student (extension only). That Student's submission window follows this setting, and other Students are not affected. It is suitable for study-adjustment arrangements for Students with disabilities or for individual special circumstances; the reason for the adjustment is visible only to the Instructor, and the Student will only receive a notification that 'the deadline has been individually adjusted for you', balancing rights and privacy.

Group collaboration

  1. Group management: Create grouping schemes (a Course may have multiple sets, such as "report groups" and "experiment groups"), supporting manual grouping by the Instructor, random even allocation, and self-enrolment by Students (a cap on numbers may be set).
  2. Group submission: After an assignment is set to "Group submission", any group member may upload and submit on behalf of the group; mark once, the whole group receives the same grade and it is synced to the Gradebook.
  3. Within-group peer assessment (WebPA): when enabled, group members assess each other’s contribution (1–5 points), and the system calculates each person’s contribution coefficient using the WebPA algorithm; you can write “group score × individual coefficient” into the Gradebook with one click to address free-riding. Peer-assessment results are visible to Instructors only.
  4. Report scoring: oral presentation scheduling plus real-time whole-class peer assessment. When a group is open for presentation, students in the audience score against the rubric and the system aggregates in real time; the presenting group sees an anonymous class average.
  5. Group overview: Across assignments, review the overall picture of each group's submissions, grades and peer-assessment coefficients.

Roll call check-in and leave requests

"Attendance check-in" generates a time-limited 6-digit check-in code (the large display is suitable for projection), which students enter on the course page to check in. After the window closes, you can manually adjust individual students to late, official leave or absent. Attendance rate can be set as a system source in the Gradebook (present = 1, late = 0.5, official leave excluded from the denominator).

Leave application process: a Student submits a leave request on the Course page's "attendance check-in" card (date + leave type + reason), and you approve or reject it in "leave review". After approval, any attendance record already present on that day is immediately marked as public leave, and attendance records starting afterwards on that day are also automatically marked as public leave — Students who have applied in advance no longer need to worry about being marked absent, and you do not need to manually amend each session.

Gradebook and semester final grades

"Course Gradebook" imports system sources such as Quizzes, Worksheets, Surveys, Forums, Assignments and attendance with one click; you can also add manual columns or import Excel. End-of-term workflow:

  1. Tick the fields to include in the semester total grade and set weights;
  2. Preview weighted total score and grade conversion (the score ranges for A+ to F can be customised);
  3. Each student may make end-of-term adjustments (with reasons);
  4. After settlement lock, it becomes a snapshot; then, once published, Students can see their semester grades and grade letters;
  5. Can be exported as CSV for import into the administrative system.
Tip

"Finalisation" and "Publication" are two separate steps: finalisation locks the score snapshot for you to check, and only after you confirm it is correct is it published to students. It can be unlocked and recalculated at any time before publication.

Classroom interaction (Live mode)

The side bar "Class Live Mode" (/live/Course ID) is a dark control console designed for projection and a second device. It can be operated from a mobile phone, iPad or classroom computer, and includes five tabs:

  • Roll call: large sign-in code and live attendance list.
  • Rapid quiz: real-time multiple-choice questions can be set with a countdown timer and correct answers; during answering, students cannot see the correct answer, which is revealed only after submissions are collected, together with the class-wide correct rate. Questions can be imported directly from the Course question bank.
  • Countdown timer: discussion and activity timing.
  • Random call: randomly select from the register (limited to those who have signed in today).
  • Live Feedback: three in-class feedback channels, including the confusion signal (students press “I’m lost”; you see an anonymous count of presses over the past 15 minutes, so you know right away when you are going too fast), the hand-raise queue (a named queue for questions), and the Exit Ticket (timed anonymous feedback before class ends: today’s biggest takeaway + the muddiest concept).
Tip

Perplexity and Exit Ticket are completely anonymous to the Instructor side (only statistics and shuffled text are visible), so Students are more willing to give honest feedback; the hand-raising queue is named, making it easier for you to call on people. The two are designed for different purposes, and this can be explained to Students to build trust.

Course calendar and notifications

"Course Calendar" automatically aggregates the schedules for Quizzes, Surveys, Worksheets, Assignments, AI tasks and attendance-taking; you can also add custom events (such as mid-term exams or off-campus visits). Both students and instructors can use a iCal subscription link to add the course schedule to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook, and schedule updates will sync automatically.

The notification bell in the top right aggregates site events: Students submitting assignments, pending leave requests, grade returns, leave review results, deadline reminders, and more. Click to go directly to the relevant page.

Appendix B: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q: What should I do if I cannot find my Course in search?

Please confirm that the semester and school are correct. If the Course has not yet been imported into the system by the school, please use the "Create New Course" function to create it yourself.

Q: What should I do if the verification code has expired?

Tap "Resend" to obtain a new verification code. A 5-minute cooldown is required between sends.

Q: Students say they cannot join the Course?

Please check: (1) Is the course in private mode? If so, please confirm that you have shared the correct code. (2) Has the code been regenerated? Old codes become invalid after regeneration. (3) Has the Student exceeded the limit of 10 incorrect attempts per hour?

Q: Can I claim multiple Courses at the same time?

Yes. After completing e-mail verification once, you do not need to verify again when claiming other courses within 15 minutes.

Q: Why does the 2FA verification code keep failing?

TOTP codes are time-based; please make sure your phone's system clock is set to 'Automatic time'. An incorrect phone time is the most common cause of failure.

Q: How can I change the AI TA’s behaviour?

In the Instructor dashboard, click 'Course Management' → 'Course Setup' in the left-hand menu and edit the System Prompt field. Changes take effect immediately, and Students' new conversations will use the updated settings.

Q: Can Instructors see conversations between Students and AI?

Yes. In Instructor mode for a Course, you can view all conversation records between Students and the AI TA to understand students' learning status and common questions.

RAGRetrieval-Augmented Generation. Allows AI to first retrieve relevant content from the teaching materials uploaded by teachers before combining that content to generate an answer, improving the accuracy and relevance of the response.
Bloom's TaxonomyBloom's revised taxonomy classifies cognitive ability into six levels: remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate and create. Uedu uses this framework to analyse the cognitive levels shown in Student and AI dialogue.
TOTPTime-based One-Time Password. A technology used for two-factor authentication (2FA), in which an authenticator app generates a new 6-digit code every 30 seconds.
