兩個相鄰街庄為了迎神賽會的排場互不相讓，競相鋪張、大肆花費，只為在熱鬧場面上壓過對方，結果兩敗俱傷、勞民傷財。作品以詼諧筆調描寫民間迎神競賽的虛榮與浪費，反思舊社會愛面子、鬥意氣的積習，是台灣新文學初期以白話書寫民俗題材的代表作之一。
